London is the capital and mostpopulous city of England and the United Kingdom. The city is also the largestand most populous city in Great Britain as well as the largest urban area inEurope in terms of area. Standing on the River Thames in the south east of theisland of Great Britain, London has been a major settlement for two millennia.It was founded by the Romans.London's ancient core, the City of London, largely retains its medievalboundaries. Since at least the 19th century, "London" has alsoreferred to the metropolis around this core which today is governed by theMayor of London.

The ancientCity of London has included over 2 million people as one of the most importantresidential centers in London. Since the city was built by the Romans in manyyears ago, it has been asource of great historical movements. Accordingly, the city has witnessedthe English Renaissance, industrial and revolutionary developments and Gothicrevival.

The city isone of the major commercial, financial and cultural centers in the world andthe city has a great influence on politics, education, entertainment, media,architecture and art around the world.

According toofficial statistics, London has included a population of over 7, 512, 400 (inmid-2006) within its city limits and it is considered the most populous city inEuropean Union. The area of this city is expandingincreasingly so that the city's population has reached over 8, 278, 251 in2010. The population of England's capital region is estimated between 12 to 14million people. Due to the migration of people fromdifferent parts of the world into the city, some diverse civilization, culture,religion and traditions can be observed in the area and today 300 differentlanguages are spoken in the city.
